Favorite albums of 2014

January 1, 2015

Happy new year!

2014 was filled with fantastic music – reissues of records I already love (perhaps a separate post on those) and an onslaught of new discoveries.

My most favorite record was Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band – I posted the video to this earlier this year, but here is is again – check ’em out!

Here are the albums I especially loved this past year – I made a link to a Spotify playlist so you can listen to ’em all and let me know what you think – and what your favoites are.

My top in no particular order:
    – D’Angelo – Black Messiah
    – Jenny Lewis – The Voyager
    – St Vincent – St Vincent
    – Run the Jewels – Run the Jewels 2

More importantly though, is that I had an amazing run of concerts this year that were all amazing. Sometimes you end up with one that does not live up to the hype, but this year loved them all
    – St Vincent
    – The National
    – Outkast and Rick Ross (who was amazing and I was so surprised)
    – Playboy JazzFest (Allan Stone and Jamie Cullum especially)
    – Steve Martin & Edie Brickell
    – City & Colour
    – Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with Steve Winwood
    – Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gary Clark Jr.

Great set of concerts and records! I need to spend more time with that Jenny Lewis album. I saw St Vincent at Pitchfork – she was so excellent – but the record doesnt have the same punch for me. Hopefully we’ll get to see some music – and Cubs games – next time you are in town!
